Wilmington, North Carolina – Dangerous heat and oppressive humidity are making for another sweltering day across southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina, where heat index values are expected to climb as high as 107 degrees this afternoon. The combination of temperatures in the 90s and tropical humidity will create conditions that can quickly lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke during prolonged outdoor exposure.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, afternoon high temperatures will reach the mid-90s across much of the region, including Wilmington, Whiteville, Burgaw, Elizabethtown, Lumberton, Conway, Florence and Myrtle Beach. Heat index values will peak near 107 degrees, with the most dangerous conditions expected during the afternoon and early evening.
Beach communities, including Carolina Beach, Surf City, Holden Beach and Bald Head Island, will be slightly cooler because of the ocean breeze, but humidity will remain high enough to make outdoor activities physically demanding. Officials warn that conditions could become even hotter on Sunday as the hot pattern continues.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day. Take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings if working outside, and check on older adults, young children and anyone without reliable cooling. Pets and livestock should also have access to fresh drinking water and adequate shade.
The dangerous heat is expected to continue through the weekend, with little overnight relief. Continue monitoring updates from the National Weather Service, as additional heat advisories may be issued if temperatures and humidity continue to increase.
