Wilmington, NC – A round of heavy showers and thunderstorms could bring flash flooding to parts of southeastern North Carolina Friday afternoon and evening, with localized downpours threatening low-lying roads and poorly drained areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, widespread showers are expected after 11 a.m. Friday, with thunderstorms building through the afternoon. Rainfall amounts may range from a quarter to three-quarters of an inch, with some areas receiving over an inch in a short time. Robeson, Bladen, Columbus, Brunswick, and New Hanover counties are among those most likely to see impacts.

Storms may create brief street flooding in areas like downtown Wilmington, Leland, and Carolina Beach, especially where drainage is limited. Drivers are urged to avoid water-covered roads and plan for slower evening commutes. Outdoor activities may need rescheduling, especially for those with beach plans or late-day events.

No additional severe weather is expected beyond Friday, and the weekend trend turns drier. Spotter activation is not anticipated, but updates may be issued if rain intensifies more than forecast.
