Wilmington, NC – Roads near downtown Wilmington could begin flooding by 5 p.m. Sunday as a Coastal Flood Advisory takes effect during the evening high tide.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, up to half a foot of water could inundate low-lying areas near the Cape Fear River from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday. The advisory covers locations including the lower Cape Fear and parts of downtown Wilmington, where storm drains near Water Street and Market Street may overflow.
The lowest sections of USS North Carolina Road and Battleship Road are especially vulnerable, with water levels expected to rise near the moderate flood stage. While rainfall is not currently a major factor, tidal forces alone could trigger minor flooding.
Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time and avoid roads covered by water. Officials warn against attempting to pass barricades or flooded roadways of unknown depth.
No further hazardous conditions are expected for the rest of the week in southeastern North Carolina, though scattered storms are possible by Monday night. The National Weather Service may issue additional alerts depending on evolving tide and wind patterns.
