WILMINGTON, N.C. – Residents in downtown Wilmington could face flooding up to one foot deep tonight as high tide pushes into the lower Cape Fear River, prompting a Coastal Flood Advisory until 11 p.m. Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, minor flooding is expected along Water Street and Battleship Road, where water could cover low-lying sections and disrupt evening travel. Portions of U.S. 421 and other roads near the river may also experience closures as water levels rise with the evening tide.
Officials urge drivers to use caution and avoid flooded routes, as even shallow water can be dangerous and damage vehicles. Additional flooding could occur during morning and evening high tides into the weekend, especially in downtown Wilmington and surrounding riverfront areas.
Farther inland, the weather remains mostly dry with highs near 86 Wednesday and scattered thunderstorms possible late in the week. Breezy northeast winds may also enhance tidal impacts along the immediate shoreline.
Flooding concerns are expected to persist through at least early next week, with another round of high tides likely to cause minor issues by Sunday. Advisories could be reissued as conditions warrant.
