Wilmington, N.C. – Streets along the Cape Fear River could see flooding through Saturday as a Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect for New Hanover County. Drivers may encounter water-covered roads, particularly near downtown Wilmington and low-lying neighborhoods, during high tide cycles.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, one to two feet of inundation above ground level is possible in flood-prone areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. The advisory began at 7 a.m. Friday and extends until 1 p.m. Saturday.

Impacted areas include downtown Wilmington’s Water Street from Orange to Red Cross streets, where flooding often forces road closures. Portions of River Road, Battleship Road, and residential streets near the USS North Carolina may also become impassable. Highway 421 near Carolina Beach Road faces potential flooding as well.

Officials urge drivers to avoid flooded areas, noting that barricades will be in place. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains the key safety message as even shallow water can disable vehicles or pose serious risks.

Minor tidal flooding is expected to continue through evening high tides into early next week. Residents should monitor updates as additional advisories may be issued.
