WILMINGTON, N.C. — Minor coastal flooding is expected in downtown Wilmington Friday evening as the lower Cape Fear River rises during high tide. Residents near the waterfront are urged to take precautions, with water levels projected to reach up to half a foot above ground in low-lying areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, the Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday. Forecasters say the lowest sections of USS North Carolina Road and Battleship Road will likely see flooding, with water possibly spreading from storm drains onto Water Street near Market Street in the downtown area.
The advisory includes the lower Cape Fear River basin, where tidal overflow can quickly impact roadways and pedestrian areas. Motorists should avoid flooded streets and never attempt to drive through standing water. Businesses near the riverfront are advised to move vehicles and outdoor equipment to higher ground before high tide peaks.
The National Weather Service recommends residents in flood-prone areas stay alert for rising waters through the evening hours as another round of higher tides is possible this weekend.
Warnings remain in effect until 9 p.m. Friday.
