Wilmington, North Carolina – Rainfall totals up to 1.5 inches could impact travel along Interstate 40 and Interstate 95 through Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, widespread rainfall is expected across southeast North Carolina and northeast South Carolina through Monday. Most communities are forecast to receive between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain, with locally lower amounts between one-half inch and 1 inch farther inland.
Higher totals near 1.5 inches are projected for Wilmington, Lumberton, Whiteville, Myrtle Beach, and North Myrtle Beach. Areas including Florence, Marion, and Kingstree may see closer to 0.5 to 1 inch.
Officials say the rainfall will be beneficial as the region remains in moderate to severe drought conditions. The latest U.S. Drought Monitor update shows widespread moderate drought, with pockets of severe drought across portions of coastal and inland counties.
While the rainfall is expected to help alleviate some drought stress, forecasters caution that one event will not eliminate long-term deficits.
Motorists traveling along I-40, I-95, U.S. Highway 17, and U.S. Highway 74 should prepare for periods of steady rain and possible ponding on roadways, particularly during heavier bands.
Residents in low-lying areas should monitor for localized flooding, though widespread river flooding is not anticipated at this time.
Commuters, beach visitors, and outdoor workers may experience wet conditions through the end of the weekend.
Officials encourage residents to monitor updated forecasts and remain aware of changing conditions as rainfall continues into Monday.
