Wilmington, NC — A warm, breezy Sunday is underway across southeast North Carolina and northeast South Carolina, but the combination of dry air, dry vegetation, and gusty winds will elevate fire danger this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.
Temperatures will climb into the mid-70s along the coast and the upper 70s inland, making for another unseasonably mild day. Skies will remain mostly sunny, but the bigger concern is the strengthening winds. Gusts of 20 to 30 mph are expected through the afternoon, particularly inland where mixing of drier air will be strongest.
These breezy and dry conditions will increase the risk of accidental fire starts and rapid fire spread. Forecasters urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, use caution with heat-producing equipment, and ensure that any previous burns are fully extinguished. Even small sparks—such as from grill embers, trailer chains, or yard equipment—could ignite dry fuels.
Humidity values will drop during peak heating hours, further contributing to the elevated fire threat. The risk will be highest from early afternoon through sunset.
Tonight, winds will diminish and temperatures will cool sharply under clear skies. The coast will fall into the mid-40s, while inland communities will drop into the upper 30s to lower 40s, signaling the return of cooler overnight conditions despite the warm afternoons.
The pattern of warm days and cool nights will continue early this week, with another round of breezy conditions possible on Monday. No significant rain is expected over the next several days, which may allow fire danger to persist until moisture returns.
Local officials recommend staying aware of changing fire weather conditions and checking for any burn restrictions before engaging in outdoor activities that could cause sparks.
