Wilmington, North Carolina – Scattered thunderstorms could drench parts of coastal North Carolina late Friday as heat and humidity combine with unstable air to trigger late-day storms.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, storms are most likely between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., with a 50–60% chance of rain mainly along the coast. Highs will reach around 90°F inland and mid-80s along the beaches. The storm risk continues through the weekend, with evening rain chances holding at 45% Saturday and climbing again Sunday.
Localized downpours, frequent lightning, and gusty winds could disrupt evening plans or beach travel, especially from Carolina Beach to Topsail Island. Inland areas like Elizabethtown and Burgaw may also see isolated storms. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and avoid driving during heavy rainfall.
With inland highs topping out near 94°F and humidity pushing the heat index into the upper 90s, residents should stay hydrated and limit strenuous outdoor activity midday.
Storms may continue through Sunday evening, especially in the southeastern counties. Updates from the NWS will be issued as needed.
