Wilmington, North Carolina – Minor to moderate winter weather impacts are expected across southeastern North Carolina this weekend as freezing rain develops inland, prompting an Ice Storm Warning for portions of the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, an Ice Storm Warning is in effect for Marlboro and Robeson counties, where confidence is highest for ice accumulations up to around one-quarter inch. Surrounding inland counties are under a Winter Storm Watch or Winter Weather Advisory, with freezing rain expected to be the primary hazard.

Forecasters say the greatest impacts will occur Saturday evening through Sunday evening, particularly in northwestern inland areas, where colder surface temperatures will allow ice to accumulate on roads, bridges, trees, and power lines. Even light ice can create dangerous driving conditions, especially on elevated and untreated surfaces.

Closer to the coast, including the Wilmington area, impacts are expected to be more limited, with less ice accumulation due to slightly warmer temperatures. However, officials warn that conditions can change quickly, and slick spots remain possible.

Moderate travel impacts are anticipated inland, with possible localized disruptions to infrastructure where ice builds. Residents are urged to limit travel during freezing rain, prepare for potential power interruptions, and continue monitoring official forecasts as the event approaches.
