Wilmington, NC – Clouds are on the move again across the Carolina coast, signaling the start of a wetter, cooler pattern that will settle in by the weekend. After two clear, comfortable days, a developing low-pressure system is expected to bring widespread rain to the Wilmington area late Thursday through Saturday, creating slick roads and potential travel delays along U.S. 17 and I-140.

According to the National Weather Service, rain chances surge to 90% by Friday morning, with steady rainfall continuing through much of Saturday. While most areas will see between 0.5 and 1 inch of total rainfall, locally higher amounts are possible near coastal communities. Forecasters also note the chance for brief heavy downpours Friday afternoon that could cause ponding in low-lying intersections and slow-moving traffic.

Temperatures will stay mild, hovering near 51°F Friday and 52°F Saturday, but the damp air will make it feel cooler. Winds will pick up slightly from the north, adding to that early-December chill.

By Sunday, the system should move offshore, leaving behind partly sunny skies and highs in the mid-50s. Early next week looks drier, though another frontal boundary could bring light rain chances by Tuesday.

Drivers are urged to slow down on wet roads and keep headlights on during rain.
