Wilmington, NC – A sharp blast of cold air is gripping Wilmington and surrounding coastal communities tonight, with dangerously low wind chill values expected to linger into Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, wind chill values across southeastern North Carolina are forecast to drop into the single digits to low teens overnight. In Wilmington, minimum wind chills are expected to hover near 9 degrees, while nearby areas such as Burgaw, Whiteville, and Jacksonville could see readings between 7 and 11 degrees.
A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect as strong northwest winds combine with already cold temperatures, making it feel significantly colder than the thermometer indicates. Actual air temperatures Monday will struggle to recover, with afternoon highs expected to top out only in the mid to upper 30s, well below seasonal averages.
Forecasters say the coldest conditions will occur during the pre-dawn and early morning hours Monday, creating risks for frostbite with prolonged outdoor exposure. Officials recommend dressing in layers, covering exposed skin, and limiting time outdoors when possible. Pet owners are urged to bring animals indoors, and residents should check on elderly neighbors or those without reliable heating.
While sunshine is expected Monday, it will do little to warm the region as cold air remains firmly in place. Winds will gradually ease later in the day, but temperatures are not expected to rebound significantly until later in the week.
Drivers should also be aware of cold conditions during the morning commute, especially in rural areas where frost may develop on bridges and overpasses.
Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware and follow updates from local officials as cold conditions persist across the Cape Fear region.
