Braidwood, IL – A Wilmington man has been arrested following a violent domestic incident in Braidwood early on Saturday morning.

James W. Kawell, 50, of the 100 block of Dogwood Lane, was arrested on charges including six counts of domestic battery, unlawful restraint, and aggravated assault, following an alleged incident involving his girlfriend.

According to the Braidwood Police Department, officers responded to a call at approximately 2:34 a.m. on July 19, 2025, reporting a domestic battery in the 100 block of Dogwood Lane. Upon arrival, officers made contact with a female victim who stated that Kawell had struck her multiple times and choked her. She also claimed that after the initial assault, Kawell retrieved a kitchen knife, placed it to her throat, and made threatening statements. The suspect fled the scene before officers arrived.

Officers observed visible injuries on the victim that were consistent with her account. A witness to the incident also provided a statement that corroborated the victim’s claims.

While Braidwood officers were investigating the situation, the Channahon Police Department located and stopped Kawell’s vehicle as it entered their jurisdiction. He was identified and subsequently arrested before being transported back to Braidwood for booking.

It was later discovered that Kawell was on parole following a prior conviction for domestic battery. He was formally charged in court on July 20, 2025, and remanded into custody following a detention hearing.

The Braidwood Police Department extended its gratitude to the Channahon Police Department and the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office for their assistance in the case.

All individuals arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
