Wilmington, IL – A fire broke out early Wednesday morning at a home on Route 53, north of Wilmington, causing extensive damage to the property and displacing six residents.

Firefighters responded to the scene around 7:46 a.m. after reports of smoke and flames coming from the attic of the two-and-a-half-story single-family home. Due to the rural location, which lacks fire hydrants, firefighters conducted rural water supply operations to battle the blaze. Mutual aid was requested immediately, and several surrounding agencies assisted Wilmington firefighters in quickly extinguishing the fire.

One male resident was transported to a local hospital by Wilmington EMS for treatment. The fire displaced four adults, two juveniles, and several pets. The Red Cross was contacted to assist the affected family.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
