Wilmington, Delaware – Drivers across northern Delaware have hours to prepare before up to 17 inches of snow begins falling by 10 a.m. Sunday, threatening to cripple travel through the Monday evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for New Castle County from 10 a.m. Sunday until 6 p.m. Monday. Forecasters expect widespread snowfall totals between 13 and 17 inches, with wind gusts reaching 40 mph. The combination of heavy snowfall and strong winds will produce blowing snow and periods of sharply reduced visibility.

The storm will have statewide consequences, but New Castle County, including Wilmington, faces the brunt of the impact. Major corridors such as Interstate 95, Interstate 295, Route 1 and Route 13 could become snow-covered and hazardous Sunday afternoon, with conditions worsening overnight. Gusts near 40 mph may drift snow across bridges and elevated roadways, increasing the risk of spinouts and stalled vehicles.

Travel could become very difficult to impossible at times, especially late Sunday night through midday Monday. Officials urge residents to avoid non-essential travel, prepare for slower emergency response times, and check Delaware 511 for real-time road updates. Warnings remain in effect through 6 p.m. Monday, and additional advisories could follow if snowfall rates intensify.
