WILMINGTON, Del. – Severe thunderstorms are expected to push through Delaware Saturday evening, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds, and the risk of localized flooding before clearing late tonight. Storms may develop as early as late afternoon, but the strongest cells are forecast between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, rain chances rise to 80% Saturday night, with some storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts. Wilmington, Newark, and Dover should all be prepared for rapidly changing conditions and possible flash flooding on low-lying roads.

Travelers on I-95, Route 1, and secondary highways could face sudden downpours and reduced visibility. Emergency managers urge drivers to avoid flooded intersections and to delay travel tonight if possible.

Conditions will improve by Sunday morning, with clouds giving way to sunshine and highs near 74 degrees. Much calmer weather takes over early next week, with sunny skies and highs in the mid-70s expected through Wednesday.

The storm threat ends by daybreak Sunday, but residents should stay alert for lingering wet roads and possible debris cleanup.
