Willowbrook, Ill. — On June 11, the Willowbrook Police Department, Parks and Recreation Department and Village of Willowbrook announced new signage would be posted for e-bikes. The announcement follows new guidelines and regulations for e-bikes mandated by the state in May 2025.

The signs inform e-bike users to “walk your wheels” in certain areas. Willowbrook informed residents that these signs would help educate the public about official e-bike and e-scooter regulations. Willowbrook has also created an information hub on the Village website with state and village regulations posted.

The key rules for e-bike users include new classes for age restrictions. Users of Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes must be over 16 and using manual power only. Operators of Class 3 bikes must be 16 years old. E-scooter users must be over 18.

It is prohibited to ride e-bikes and e-scooters on sidewalks or on public property where motor vehicles are not allowed, including parks. The bikes are allowed on multi-use paths and bike paths provided it is by manual power only. Motorized propulsion is not allowed on paths.

All e-bikes are required to have pedals and a motor that produces less than 750 watts. All e-bikes are required to follow standard bicycle rules of the road.
