Williamsburg, IN – A 41-year-old Illinois woman died Monday evening following a collision between a motorcycle and a truck in Wayne County.
According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 5 p.m. at the intersection of North U.S. 35 and Sycamore Street in Williamsburg. Deputies said a northbound Ford F-550 truck pulling a flatbed trailer, driven by Joseph Riggs, 71, of Economy, Indiana, was turning west onto Sycamore Street when the motorcycle attempted to pass in a no-passing zone.
The motorcycle, operated by Shane Johnson, 43, of Ottawa, Illinois, with passenger Kelly Rick, 41, also of Ottawa, struck the trailer during the turn, investigators said. Bystanders attempted life-saving measures, but Rick was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said Johnson and Riggs were both transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The sheriff’s office expressed appreciation for the coordinated response from Wayne County Dispatch, Reid Health EMS and Trauma Team, the Williamsburg and Fountain City fire departments, and the Wayne County Coroner’s Office.
The crash remains under investigation, and officials noted toxicology results are pending. Deputies said the initial findings reflect preliminary details gathered at the scene.
