Williams, IN – What began as a complaint about an aggressive pit bull in Williams turned into a major drug arrest Friday, December 12, according to the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Greg Day and Special Deputy Ronnie Blackburn responded to a report of a loose pit bull in the 200 block of Dogwood Acres. The caller said the dog had growled and bared its teeth after coming onto their property. When deputies arrived, they traced the dog to a nearby camper and made contact with a woman at the scene.

According to the sheriff’s office, the woman was identified as the girlfriend of Claude David Swartz, 49, of Bedford, who was wanted on a felony parole warrant. Officers entered the camper and took Swartz into custody without incident.

During the arrest, deputies allegedly spotted a small amount of methamphetamine and a pipe inside. A search warrant was obtained and executed with the assistance of Indiana State Police and the county prosecutor’s office. Officers then discovered about 40 grams of methamphetamine, opiates, a loaded syringe, and scales — items commonly tied to drug dealing, officials said.

Swartz was booked into the Lawrence County Jail on the parole warrant and additional charges of Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Deal, Possession Over 28 Grams, and Possession of a Hypodermic Syringe.

The dog was secured at another residence, and no further issues were reported.
