Portland, Oregon – Snow is expected to return to the Oregon Cascades this weekend, with a growing chance for significant accumulations that could impact mountain travel and recreation.
According to the National Weather Service in Portland, a brief break from precipitation will continue through the next few days, but snow is forecast to redevelop in the Cascades beginning Saturday and lasting into early next week. Forecast guidance shows a moderate probability of at least 12 inches of snow within a 72-hour period, particularly at higher elevations.
The highest probabilities are centered on major Cascade passes. Santiam Pass has an estimated 55 percent chance of receiving 12 inches or more of snow, while Willamette Pass has around a 50 percent chance. Government Camp, along U.S. Highway 26, currently shows about a 35 percent chance of reaching that threshold. Snow totals may increase further as confidence improves closer to the weekend.
Snowfall is expected to begin early Saturday morning and continue intermittently through Tuesday morning. While exact totals remain uncertain, forecasters note that travel impacts are likely, especially during periods of heavier snow and overnight hours when road conditions deteriorate quickly.
Key travel routes including U.S. Highway 26, Highway 22, Highway 58, and Highway 20 may experience snow-covered roads, reduced visibility, and chain or traction tire requirements. Conditions can change rapidly in the Cascades, particularly during active winter patterns.
In addition to the Cascades, light snow is also possible across the Coast Range and Cascade foothills, though amounts there are expected to remain lower.
The National Weather Service urges anyone planning mountain travel to monitor forecasts closely, check road conditions before departure, and carry an emergency kit. Travelers should be prepared for delays and sudden changes in weather, especially during the weekend.
Skiers, weekend travelers, and freight drivers should allow extra time and remain flexible with travel plans as snow returns to Oregon’s mountain passes.
Forecast confidence will continue to improve as the weekend approaches, with updated snowfall projections expected in the coming days.
