Joliet, Illinois – Drivers across Will and Kendall counties face rapidly rising water on roads and near creeks this afternoon, with another 1 to 2 inches of rain expected to fall before 6 p.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service, Doppler radar showed thunderstorms producing 1 to 2 inches of rainfall by 2:53 p.m., with additional rounds likely to push streams out of their banks through the early evening. A Flood Advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m.
Communities including Joliet, Plainfield, Romeoville, and Yorkville are already seeing water collect near low-lying roads and drainage areas. In Lockport, New Lenox, and Homer Glen, smaller creeks could spill over, especially near neighborhood crossings and rural routes. Portions of I-55 frontage roads and local connectors may see ponding during heavier downpours.
Emergency officials urge residents to avoid driving through water-covered roads. Just a few inches of moving water can stall or sweep vehicles. Charge devices and monitor alerts in case conditions worsen quickly.
The heaviest rain should taper closer to sunset, but elevated water levels may linger into the evening commute. Additional advisories could be issued if storms redevelop.
