Will County, IL – The Will County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents to stay alert during fall “coyote season,” a time when young coyotes leave their family groups to establish new territories. This natural dispersal often leads to more sightings in neighborhoods, parks, and along roadsides.

Deputies shared several safety tips for residents who might encounter a coyote:

  • Do not run. Stand tall and make yourself appear larger.
  • Make noise. Clap, yell, or use a whistle to scare it away.
  • Keep pets leashed and supervised, especially during dawn and dusk.
  • Secure food sources, including trash and pet food, to avoid attracting wildlife.

Officials note that coyotes are typically shy and avoid human interaction, but awareness and prevention steps help keep both people and wildlife safe.

Residents who encounter aggressive animals are encouraged to contact local animal control or law enforcement.
