Braidwood, IL – Motorists traveling through Will County should prepare for delays starting Monday as routine inspections of the Interstate 55 bridges over the Des Plaines River near Channahon are set to begin, weather permitting.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, inspections will start on the southbound bridges Aug. 11 and continue through Aug. 18, before shifting to the northbound bridges. The full inspection process is expected to conclude by Saturday, Aug. 23.

To reduce traffic disruptions, southbound closures will take place from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and on Saturdays if necessary. Northbound lane closures are scheduled between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. A minimum of one lane will remain open in both directions throughout the inspections.

In addition, pavement repairs on the northbound I-55 bridges are planned for the weekends of Aug. 15 and Aug. 22. Weather permitting, work will occur from 9 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday, and from 9 p.m. Saturday to 11 a.m. Sunday. At least one northbound lane will remain open during these repairs, and southbound traffic will not be affected.

Officials are urging drivers to expect delays, allow extra travel time, and consider alternative routes. Motorists are advised to follow posted speed limits, watch for signage, and stay alert for workers and equipment in the construction zones.
