Joliet, IL – Residents in Will County looking to clear space in their garages while helping others globally can participate in the Forest Preserve District’s annual “Recycle Your Bicycle” event, which kicks off Friday, Sept. 13.
The bike collection program, held in partnership with the nonprofit Working Bikes, runs through Sunday, Sept. 28. Drop-off locations include Hidden Oaks Preserve in Bolingbrook, McKinley Woods – Kerry Sheridan Grove in Channahon, Monee Reservoir in Monee Township and Sugar Creek Preserve in Joliet.
According to the Forest Preserve District, all donated bicycles will be refurbished and distributed to people in need locally and across the globe. Working Bikes has helped supply transportation and independence through bike donations to communities worldwide for over two decades.
All types of bicycles are accepted regardless of condition, and no registration is required to participate. Donations can be dropped off during regular preserve hours throughout the two-week window. Organizers encourage residents to inspect bikes for any dangerous damage but say even bikes in poor shape can often be salvaged for parts.
This long-running program aligns with the Forest Preserve’s broader mission to promote sustainability and community engagement through conservation initiatives. By partnering with an organization like Working Bikes, the District is ensuring unused items find new life and purpose.
Residents are encouraged to act early and take advantage of this opportunity to contribute to a meaningful cause with global impact.
