Wilmington, IL – Detectives with the Will County Sheriff’s Office have detained two suspects after the remains of an infant were found buried on a residential property along the 1900 block of Roberts Road in Wilmington, according to a release Friday.
Investigators said they received information on December 4 about a possible infant burial at the location. Detectives later learned that a 36-year-old woman had allegedly given birth to a child whose remains were buried on the property and marked with a makeshift headstone. A search warrant was secured following interviews with witnesses.
On December 5 around 9 a.m., deputies located the burial site and discovered a box containing the remains of an infant, wrapped in cloth and plastic. The Will County Coroner’s Office has taken custody of the remains, and an autopsy is scheduled for December 6, 2025.
Both the woman and a 36-year-old man were questioned by detectives and allegedly made incriminating statements related to the concealment of the infant’s death. The suspects remain in custody pending formal charges following the autopsy.
The Will County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to work closely with the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office as the investigation proceeds.
