New Lenox, IL – The Mokena and New Lenox communities are mourning the loss of retired Mokena Police Commander Christopher E. Carlson, who passed away November 24 at the age of 56 after what the Mokena Police Department described as a long and courageous battle with cancer.

According to an obituary released by his family, Carlson was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose life centered on family, service, and community. He was known for coaching his children in softball and baseball, enjoyed golfing and cooking, and was widely appreciated for helping friends and family with household projects.

Carlson began his law enforcement career in 1993 with the Mokena Police Department, where he spent over three decades serving the community. Over the years, he held several roles including Patrol Officer, DARE Instructor, Detective, Sergeant, and ultimately Commander, a position in which he oversaw day-to-day department operations. He officially retired in 2024, closing a distinguished 30-year career marked by dedication and professionalism.

The department shared a tribute Wednesday, stating that their thoughts and prayers are with Carlson’s family during this difficult time and recognizing his lasting impact on the community he served.

Carlson is survived by his wife of 35 years, Pagee, his children Nicole, Kayla, Cassie, and Jake, and several grandchildren and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, Norma Jean and Lester Carlson Jr.

A memorial visitation will be held Saturday, November 29, 2025, from 9 a.m. until an 11:30 a.m. memorial service at Hickey Memorial Chapel, located at 2100 Calistoga Drive in New Lenox.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
