Authorities said the incident occurred at 1:48 a.m. on September 13 at the station located at 2422 Route 59. A suspect allegedly displayed a handgun, demanded money, and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
According to the Joliet Police Department, detectives later identified 27-year-old Devion Smith of Joliet as the suspect. Smith was already in custody at the Morris Police Department on an unrelated case when officers confirmed his identity. The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office approved armed robbery charges.
On September 18, Joliet Police, with assistance from the Morris Police Department and the Will County Tactical Unit, transported Smith without incident. He was booked at the Joliet Police Department before being transferred to the Will County Adult Detention Facility.
Detectives said Smith previously refused to answer questions when first contacted by police. Authorities have not reported any injuries in connection with the robbery.
