Will County, IL – A Will County Sheriff’s Deputy escaped injury early Wednesday after a suspect allegedly opened fire during a traffic stop in Joliet Township, according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred around 12:35 a.m. near McDonough Street and Ottawa Street when a deputy attempted to stop a speeding black Infiniti sedan without a license plate.
According to the department, the driver fled before stopping near Chicago Street and Doris Avenue, where he allegedly exited the vehicle with an AR-15 style pistol and fired two rounds toward the deputy. No deputies were struck, and the suspect fled on foot into a nearby field.
With assistance from the Joliet Police Department and the Illinois State Police, officers quickly established a perimeter. After a brief search, 20-year-old Tyshawn T. Harris was taken into custody. A K9 unit later recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the attack. Authorities also confirmed the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Joliet.
Harris has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, aggravated discharge of a firearm at a peace officer, possession of a stolen vehicle, and several traffic-related offenses.
Sheriff Mike Kelley said in a statement, “We are thankful that our deputy is safe and that this dangerous individual is now in custody.”
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials said additional charges may be filed.
