Joliet, IL – A Joliet man is facing more than a dozen charges after allegedly firing a handgun from a vehicle and later being found impaired, according to police.

According to the Joliet Police Department, officers responded around 9:01 p.m. on September 16 to the 100 block of Margaret Street after reports of a man firing a gun from a car. When they arrived, officers located a spent shell casing in the street.

Witnesses told police they heard a gunshot and saw a man yelling from a vehicle as he drove away toward a nearby residence. Officers identified the suspect as Andrew Planeta, 47, and obtained the vehicle description along with registration details. No injuries were reported.

Roughly 10 minutes later, officers located the vehicle unoccupied in the parking lot of Home Cut Donuts on West Jefferson Street. Police say a handgun was visible on the passenger seat. Planeta was arrested without incident after exiting the business. Officers determined he was allegedly impaired by alcohol.

Investigators later learned the handgun had been reported stolen from Warrenville, Illinois. Police also determined Planeta had a revoked license and multiple prior DUI convictions across several counties.

Planeta was transported to the Will County Adult Detention Facility and charged with armed habitual criminal, multiple weapons offenses, aggravated DUI, and reckless discharge of a firearm, among other counts. The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the charges.
