Joliet, IL – Joliet Central High School activated a Hold in Place & Teach Protocol for about an hour Wednesday morning after students discovered bullets inside a classroom. The precaution ended just before 10:30 a.m., and school operations have since returned to normal.
According to Joliet Township High School officials, the incident began around 9:10 a.m. when students spotted two 9-millimeter rounds on the floor and alerted their teacher. The Joliet Police Department was contacted and arrived on campus at 9:15 a.m., before any students exited the classroom.
Students and their belongings in the affected classroom were searched, officials said. No weapons or additional concerning items were found, and police determined there was no ongoing threat to staff or students.
The Hold in Place & Teach Protocol required students and staff to remain in classrooms to keep hallways clear, though instruction continued as usual. Once the situation was resolved, the protocol was lifted and the school resumed its normal schedule.
Kristine Schlismann, Director of Community & Alumni Relations for Joliet Township High School, said the swift cooperation between students, staff, and law enforcement ensured safety and minimized disruption.
The Joliet Police Department continues to investigate the discovery of the ammunition.
