Romeoville, IL – A new fossil exhibit in Will County is offering visitors a glimpse into prehistoric life beneath Illinois soil.

The Isle a la Cache Museum is opening “Souvenirs From the Silurian Sea: Fossils of Will County” on Wednesday, Sept. 3. The free exhibit runs through Sunday, Nov. 30, and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. According to the Forest Preserve District of Will County, the project was made possible with support from The Nature Foundation of Will County.

The display highlights fossils collected from the region that reveal how ancient sea creatures once thrived where prairie and towns now stand. Visitors can explore specimens from the museum’s own collection and take part in interactive stations designed to simulate fossil discovery.

“This is a rare opportunity to see prehistoric life up close, not just in textbooks, but through real fossils found right here in Will County,” said Jen Guest, facility supervisor at Isle a la Cache. She described the exhibit as “a vacation through deep time,” complete with a chance for visitors to write postcards about their journey into the past.

Along with fossil displays, the exhibit includes a character named Paleontologist Willy, who guides guests through the process of unearthing fossils. Hands-on activities allow children and adults alike to engage with science in a tactile way.

“Whether you’re a science lover or just curious about our ancient past, this exhibit will open your eyes to a world that existed hundreds of millions of years ago right beneath your feet,” Guest said.

The museum is located along the Des Plaines River in Romeoville and regularly features exhibits focused on natural and cultural history.
