Joliet, Illinois – Blowing dust and dangerously strong winds are creating life-threatening driving conditions across parts of northern Illinois Friday evening, with near-zero visibility reported along major highways including I-55, I-80, and I-294.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Dust Storm Warning is in effect until 8 p.m. for areas from Joliet to Hammond, including Bolingbrook, Plano, and Sheridan. Wind gusts up to 50 mph are also triggering a broader Wind Advisory that extends until midnight across counties like DeKalb, LaSalle, Kane, and McHenry.
The Illinois Department of Transportation warns that drivers may face whiteout-like conditions on open stretches of road. Tree limbs and unsecured objects may be blown into traffic, and power outages are possible. Officials urge drivers to pull over and turn off their lights if visibility drops, using the “Pull Aside, Stay Alive” method.
Residents with respiratory issues are advised to remain indoors. Outdoor objects should be secured immediately, and travel should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. The high winds are also a threat to high-profile vehicles, especially on elevated roadways and bridges.
Wind alerts remain active through midnight, and additional advisories may follow if the storm system continues to track north.
