Joliet, IL – A deadly collision in Joliet claimed the life of a 40-year-old driver and left a toddler injured Wednesday night, according to police.
The Joliet Police Department reported that the crash occurred around 10:22 p.m. on October 1 at Route 53 (South Chicago Street) and Dollar Tree Lane. A preliminary investigation found that a Volvo semitrailer, driven by a 58-year-old man from Orland Park, attempted to turn left onto northbound Route 53 when it crossed into the path of a Dodge Dart traveling south.
The Dodge collided with the trailer and became lodged beneath it. According to the Will County Coroner’s Office, the Dodge’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A 2-year-old boy, who had been secured in a child safety seat in the back of the car, was extricated by Joliet Fire Department crews and taken in serious condition to St. Joseph Medical Center.
Authorities said the roadway was shut down for several hours overnight while crash investigators reconstructed the scene. Identification of the deceased driver and official cause of death will be determined by the Will County Coroner’s Office.
