Joliet, IL – A 37-year-old Joliet man has been arrested following a parking lot crash that seriously injured a 74-year-old woman outside Walmart on West Jefferson Street earlier this month.

According to the Joliet Police Department, Herbert Hume was charged with four counts of Aggravated DUI and two counts of Aggravated Battery after the October 7, 2025, crash in the Walmart parking lot at 2424 West Jefferson Street.

Investigators say Hume, driving a Chevrolet Cruze, allegedly backed into a Ford Escape, then drove in reverse again, striking a 74-year-old woman who had exited her vehicle to inspect the damage. Police said Hume then drove forward, hitting the woman a second time and pinning her beneath the vehicle.

Bystanders reportedly intervened to stop Hume from driving further and assisted the victim until emergency crews arrived. The woman was transported by Joliet Fire Department paramedics to Ascension St. Joseph Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Following the crash, Hume was detained for questioning and later released pending toxicology results. Investigators obtained an arrest warrant on October 10. Hume was taken into custody without incident on October 13 and booked into the Will County Adult Detention Facility.

Police said alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor in the incident.

This investigation remains ongoing.
