Joliet, IL – In a creative effort to combat a seasonal spike in vehicle break-ins, the Forest Preserve District of Will County has launched a new safety campaign with a memorable message: “Put Your Junk in the Trunk.”
The campaign urges visitors to secure their valuables before hitting the trails, aiming to reduce crimes of opportunity often targeting unattended vehicles in forest preserves.
According to Forest Preserve Deputy Police Chief David Barrios Jr., the initiative includes humorous signage throughout local preserves and a summer social media campaign. A standout feature is a country-music themed video depicting a couple outsmarting a would-be thief by stashing their cash, valuables—even a faux Mona Lisa painting—in the trunk before heading into the woods.
“People are more likely to remember the video and its purpose because it uses exaggerated props, a sneaky criminal and has a funny catchphrase,” Barrios said. “But the message is serious.”
Barrios said thefts from vehicles remain a consistent concern during warmer months. Offenders often break windows to grab purses, phones or wallets left in plain view. The campaign’s goal is to reduce these crimes by promoting common-sense habits.
“These are crimes of opportunity,” Barrios added. “If a thief sees valuables on a seat, they may strike quickly. But if there’s nothing visible, they’re more likely to move on.”
In addition to hiding or removing valuables, the Forest Preserve police recommend visitors report suspicious activity, stay alert, and program the Forest Preserve’s non-emergency number — 815-727-6191 (option 9) — into their phones. For emergencies, call 911.
The campaign underscores a simple yet powerful strategy: think ahead, secure belongings, and enjoy the outdoors with peace of mind.
