Joliet, IL – A Joliet man escaped with minor injuries after a fire tore through his two-story home on the 300 block of Oneida Street early Monday morning.

According to the Joliet Fire Department, crews responded at 12:45 a.m. after reports of a structure fire in a residential building. When firefighters from Company 5 arrived within three minutes, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the residence’s first and second floors.

Crews allegedly launched an interior attack to contain the fire, but the structure suffered significant smoke, water, and fire damage. The lone occupant managed to escape by climbing out a second-floor window onto the porch roof. Officials noted that the homeowner had kept a ladder on the porch in case of emergencies, a precaution that may have helped him exit the burning home.

Joliet Police arrived before fire crews and allegedly used the ladder to assist the homeowner down from the roof. He was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital with minor injuries, according to authorities.

Firefighters from stations 1, 4, 5, 6, and 8 remained on the scene for about two hours, extinguishing hot spots and checking for possible fire extension. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Officials urge residents to have fire escape plans and maintain emergency equipment at home. No other injuries were reported.
