Charleston, WV – An increased risk of wildfire spread is expected across West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, and parts of Virginia today as dry conditions and gusty winds create hazardous fire conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, WV, low relative humidity ranging from 15 to 30 percent combined with wind gusts between 15 and 25 mph will contribute to the heightened fire risk throughout the afternoon and evening. Officials urge residents to avoid any outdoor burning, as even a small ignition source could quickly grow out of control under these conditions.

West Virginia’s spring fire season runs from March 1 through May 31, during which state law prohibits outdoor burning between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Similarly, Ohio enforces restrictions on outdoor burning between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. through May 31, while Kentucky and Virginia have additional burning prohibitions near woodland areas.

Authorities recommend residents exercise extreme caution with outdoor equipment, avoid discarding cigarette butts, and report any signs of smoke or fire immediately. With dry conditions persisting, fire danger will remain elevated until significant rainfall occurs.
