New Jersey faces an increased wildfire risk today, driven by dry conditions and gusty winds. A special weather statement has been issued, warning residents of the potential for fires to quickly spread. Temperatures are expected to reach the upper 70s, with low humidity between 30-40%, combined with winds up to 20 mph. These factors significantly raise the likelihood of fires, especially in wooded areas.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the fire danger will persist throughout today and into Thursday. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service urges residents to avoid outdoor burning and carefully extinguish any heat sources, including cigarettes. With Stage 3 fire restrictions now in effect, no fires are permitted in wooded areas unless contained in propane or gas-fueled stoves. Charcoal fires are also banned until further notice.
Thursday’s forecast shows cooler temperatures with highs near 67°F, but winds will remain a concern, with gusts up to 20 mph expected. Overnight, clear skies will bring lower temperatures, dipping to the mid-30s. While the humidity will slightly increase, the fire risk will remain high due to dry vegetation.
Residents traveling along major roadways like the Garden State Parkway and Route 206 should remain vigilant, as high winds may cause sudden fire flare-ups. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) advises checking local fire danger ratings before heading outdoors. The risk is expected to drop by Saturday, with partly cloudy skies and more moderate temperatures.
