Amarillo, TX – The National Weather Service in Amarillo has issued a Red Flag Warning for portions of the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, effective from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. CDT on Thursday. The warning replaces a previously issued Fire Weather Watch.

According to the National Weather Service, the affected areas in Oklahoma include Cimarron and Texas counties, while impacted Texas counties include Dallam, Hartley, Oldham, Deaf Smith, Sherman, and Moore. Forecasters warn of southwest winds reaching 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph, and relative humidity dropping as low as 8%.

These conditions significantly heighten the risk of wildfires, as the combination of strong winds, dry air, and warm temperatures creates an environment conducive to rapid fire spread. The Red Flag Threat Index ranges from 3 to 6 across the impacted regions.

Residents are urged to avoid activities that could generate open flames or sparks, such as outdoor burning, welding, or using equipment that may create sparks. Authorities emphasize the importance of adhering to local fire restrictions and reporting any signs of smoke or fire immediately.
