Sioux Falls, SD – The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls is forecasting a widespread snowfall event across the region today, with totals varying based on location.

Snow will develop over central South Dakota by mid-morning and gradually spread southeast through the day. Snowfall rates of 1 to 1.5 inches per hour are possible in a band of enhanced snowfall east of I-29, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.

  • Central South Dakota: 1–3 inches expected
  • East of the James River / southwest Minnesota / northwest Iowa: 3–6 inches common
  • Isolated higher totals up to 8 inches possible near and south of I-90

The NWS warns of slick roads, reduced visibility, and minor drifting due to gusty winds. Travel impacts are expected to be minor to moderate, especially during periods of heavier snow.

Conditions should gradually improve late tonight as the snow tapers off.
