Wichita, Kan. – Showers and thunderstorms are expected to build across central and south-central Kansas this weekend, bringing periods of heavy rainfall that could cause ponding on roads and in low-lying areas through Labor Day.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, storms will be possible Saturday evening and again Sunday into Monday. While severe weather is not anticipated, forecasters warn some stronger storms could deliver high rainfall rates. The greatest storm chances extend across Sedgwick, Butler, Harvey, Cowley, Reno, and surrounding counties.

Drivers in Wichita and neighboring communities could face slick roads, especially late Sunday into Monday morning. Localized flooding remains the main hazard, with heavier downpours expected to pool water along city streets, highways, and rural routes. Outdoor Labor Day plans could also see interruptions as storm chances linger into the afternoon.

Farther east into southeast Kansas, including Montgomery, Wilson, and Neosho counties, rainfall could become steadier by early next week, though widespread severe storms remain unlikely. Officials advise residents to allow extra travel time, keep phones charged in case of power outages, and avoid driving through flooded roads.

Storm chances ease by Tuesday as skies begin to clear, with sunny conditions returning by midweek. More advisories are possible if rainfall totals increase.
