Wichita, Kansas – Strong storms could rattle central and southern Kansas starting Thursday evening, with dangerous heat reaching up to 100° before a weekend cooldown.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, scattered thunderstorms are expected across central Kansas Thursday night, followed by a 50% chance of hit-or-miss storms Friday afternoon into the evening. Some storms may turn strong to severe, bringing pockets of heavy rain, gusty winds, and frequent lightning.

Highs will soar between 93–100°F on Thursday and stay in the low to mid-90s Friday. The heat, combined with humidity, could push heat index values into the triple digits—especially in areas like Hutchinson, Salina, and McPherson.

By Saturday, storm chances shift south, mainly impacting cities like Winfield, Arkansas City, and Independence. Temperatures will ease into the 80s through the weekend. Rain chances continue at 30% both Saturday and Sunday, with scattered thunderstorms remaining a possibility across southern Kansas.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor work during peak heat hours and remain weather-aware in the evenings. Power outages and localized flooding are possible where storms develop.

More updates will follow as new advisories are issued. Heat and storm alerts remain in effect through Friday evening.
