Wichita, Kan. – Residents across central and eastern Kansas have a narrow window to prepare as severe thunderstorms are expected to develop by late Wednesday afternoon, bringing damaging winds, hail, and a possible tornado threat into the evening hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, storms are expected to form after 4 p.m. and continue through midnight, with the highest risk stretching from Salina and Hutchinson through Wichita and into Emporia. Some storms may produce wind gusts between 60 and 70 mph, hail up to half-dollar size, and heavy rainfall capable of triggering localized flooding.

The I-35 corridor, along with U.S. 50 and nearby highways, could see rapidly deteriorating travel conditions during the evening commute. Cities including Winfield, Eureka, and Great Bend may also experience strong storm impacts as activity shifts east.

Residents should finalize severe weather plans now, charge devices, and identify safe shelter locations. Outdoor activities should be postponed, and drivers should avoid flooded roadways during heavy rain.

Storms are expected to weaken after midnight, but additional watches or warnings are likely as conditions develop Wednesday afternoon.
