WICHITA, Kan. – South-central Kansas is set for another scorching weekend as Wichita climbs to near 97 degrees Saturday under a heat advisory. The combination of high humidity and soaring afternoon temperatures will drive the heat index even higher, making outdoor activity potentially dangerous.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, south winds will hold steady through the weekend, gusting up to 22 mph at times. Sunday stays mostly sunny with highs around 96, keeping the region under oppressive heat until at least Monday.
Residents across Sedgwick County and surrounding areas should limit time outdoors during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets. Prolonged exposure without shade or cooling could quickly lead to heat-related illness.
Relief may come early next week as storm chances return. A slight risk of thunderstorms is expected Monday afternoon and evening, with higher chances Tuesday into Tuesday night. Storms could bring brief heavy rain and gusty winds, though severe weather is not guaranteed.
The heat eases midweek with highs dropping into the upper 80s by Thursday. More advisories could be issued if the heat lingers longer than forecast.
