Wichita, KS – Gusty winds and dry conditions will spark an elevated fire danger across central Kansas Sunday, with Wichita and areas along I-135 under heightened alert as spring weather patterns take hold. Conditions Sunday and again midweek could lead to fast-spreading grassland fires and spotty storms.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, high fire danger will peak Sunday due to gusty northwest winds and low humidity. Winds could reach 32 mph in Wichita by midday, with temperatures climbing to the mid-60s. A few marginally severe thunderstorms may also develop, mainly east of I-135, bringing the risk of hail and 50 to 60 mph winds.
Monday marks a brief warmup, with highs near 74°F and partly cloudy skies. Light winds will keep conditions stable. But by Wednesday night, forecasters expect another round of unsettled weather. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible through Friday, though exact timing remains uncertain.
Dry brush and windy days are typical for Kansas springs, but residents should stay alert. Fire officials recommend avoiding open burning, securing trailer chains, and reporting any smoke or flames immediately.
The extended five-day forecast shows fluctuating spring temperatures, ranging from the mid-60s to low 70s during the day and dropping into the 40s at night. Rain chances increase late week, especially Thursday and Friday, with potential for thunderstorms to return.
