Wichita, Kan. – Residents across central, south-central and southeast Kansas will face one more day of dangerous heat Tuesday before a cold front delivers more seasonable temperatures and renewed chances for thunderstorms during the middle of the week. Heat index values could climb as high as 110 degrees, creating hazardous conditions for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, highs Tuesday will reach 96 to 104 degrees, with overnight lows falling into the 70 to 75-degree range. The approaching frontal boundary is expected to sweep across Kansas Tuesday, bringing noticeably cooler air for Wednesday and Thursday along with opportunities for late-day and overnight showers and thunderstorms.
Wednesday’s highs are forecast between 88 and 93 degrees, with lows dipping to 67 to 72 degrees. Isolated late-day and overnight thunderstorms could develop as the front settles across the region. Similar conditions are expected Thursday, with highs of 89 to 94 degrees and another chance for evening and overnight storms.
Communities including Wichita, Hutchinson, Salina, El Dorado, Winfield and Arkansas City should take extra precautions Tuesday by staying hydrated, limiting strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon and checking on vulnerable neighbors. Drivers should also be prepared for changing conditions if thunderstorms develop Wednesday or Thursday evening.
Warmer weather begins to return Friday as highs rebound into the 91 to 97-degree range. The National Weather Service encourages residents to continue monitoring forecasts, as additional weather statements could be issued if thunderstorm chances increase later this week.
