Wichita, Kansas – Sweltering heat and the risk of severe thunderstorms are set to impact Kansas through the weekend, as highs near 100°F give way to rounds of rain, lightning, and gusty winds across the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, strong to severe storms could hit Central Kansas as early as Thursday evening, with the threat shifting to Southern Kansas Friday night through Sunday. Storm chances range from 30% to 50% daily, with the most intense activity expected late Thursday and Friday. Pockets of heavy rain could lead to localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas and along highways such as I-35 and US-54.
Residents in Wichita, Salina, and Dodge City should stay weather-aware, charge mobile devices, and avoid unnecessary travel during severe storms. Outdoor plans may be disrupted by sudden downpours or strong winds, and power outages are possible where storms turn severe. Cooler temperatures—highs dropping to the upper 80s by Saturday—will offer some relief but will not end the threat of showers.
This weekend’s unsettled weather follows a stretch of seasonably warm days and could resemble the strong storms that swept through the region in July 2023. More advisories may be issued if severe weather develops.
Stay tuned for updates, as thunderstorm chances and threats of heavy rain continue across Kansas through Sunday night.
