Wichita, Kansas – A strong winter storm is expected to bring accumulating snow and dangerous cold across south-central Kansas beginning Friday and continuing into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, much of the region has an 80–95% chance of receiving at least 4 inches of snow, with a 40–70% chance of totals reaching 8 inches or more. The highest probabilities include Wichita, Hutchinson, Winfield, Emporia, and surrounding communities.
Snow is expected to begin Friday afternoon, starting as early as midday in western areas and spreading east through the evening. Forecasters say snowfall may continue into Saturday before tapering off late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, depending on location.
The NWS warns of moderate impacts, including hazardous driving conditions and possible disruptions to daily life. Snow-covered roads, reduced visibility, and closures or delays may affect travel across the region, especially during Friday evening and Saturday.
In addition to snowfall, extreme cold is expected. Wind chills Friday morning are forecast to range from near zero to below 15 degrees below zero, with even colder conditions possible Saturday morning. These temperatures increase the risk of frostbite and make travel more dangerous if motorists become stranded.
Officials urge residents to prepare by limiting travel when possible, winterizing vehicles, and ensuring emergency supplies are available. Those traveling are advised to check road conditions, share travel plans, and carry winter safety kits.
The National Weather Service says forecast confidence is high for impactful winter weather and encourages residents to stay alert for updated advisories or warnings as the storm progresses.
