Wichita, Kansas – A strong cold front is expected to move through central Kansas on Sunday, bringing gusty north winds and rapidly falling temperatures throughout the day.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, temperatures will start relatively mild Sunday morning before dropping sharply behind the front. Morning readings in the 40s and 50s will fall into the 30s by Sunday afternoon across much of central Kansas, including Wichita, Hutchinson, and Salina.

North winds are expected to strengthen significantly as the front passes. The National Weather Service forecasts sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph, with higher gusts possible during the afternoon hours. These winds will contribute to a much colder feel and may make travel difficult at times, particularly for high-profile vehicles on east-west roadways.

In addition to the wind and colder air, forecasters note a 20% to 30% chance of a light wintry mix developing across parts of central Kansas Sunday morning into early afternoon. Any mix would likely consist of light rain changing briefly to snow or sleet as temperatures fall. Little to no accumulation is expected, and impacts from wintry precipitation are anticipated to be minimal.

The primary concern from this system remains the combination of strong winds and rapidly falling temperatures rather than snowfall. Wind chills will drop quickly Sunday afternoon, making outdoor conditions feel colder than actual air temperatures.

The National Weather Service advises residents to secure loose outdoor items, use caution when driving in strong crosswinds, and dress appropriately for colder and windier conditions. While widespread winter impacts are not expected, brief slick spots cannot be ruled out if a light wintry mix occurs.

Additional updates will be issued as the cold front moves through and conditions evolve Sunday.
