Wichita, Kan. – Scattered thunderstorms could linger across much of Kansas tonight and into Wednesday, with the highest chances in southeast counties before a surge of dangerous heat arrives late week.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, storms will be hit-or-miss but may bring brief downpours and lightning to communities including Parsons, Independence, and Coffeyville through Wednesday evening. Areas in central and south-central Kansas will see drier skies Tuesday, but increasing sunshine will drive up temperatures quickly.
Highs on Thursday are expected to range from the low 90s in the north to near 100 in southern counties, with heat indices topping triple digits statewide. The oppressive heat will persist into at least Sunday, raising the risk of heat-related illness for anyone without adequate cooling. Residents are urged to limit outdoor work during the hottest hours, drink plenty of water, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
Thunderstorm chances diminish after Wednesday, leaving the state under clear skies and intense heat. More advisories may be issued if humidity pushes feels-like temperatures above 105 degrees later this week.
